Action for Age II challenged university finalists and recent graduates to design solutions aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly, based on fostering intergenerational relationships.
The program began with a national ideas competition in October 2010, involving 22 higher education institutions and universities across Portugal. Out of 71 submissions created by 227 students, individually or in groups, 12 projects were selected in February 2011. These were developed into pilot implementations under the mentorship of a pair of social designers.
The project outputs were showcased in an exhibition as part of the EXD’11 Biennial program, hosted at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The opening event featured the premiere of a documentary by Rui Simões, which closely followed the project’s dynamics, alongside a contextualization conference.
Action for Age II engaged 45 students from five educational institutions (IPVC, UA, ESAD.CR, FBAUL), with projects developed across five different locations: Viana do Castelo, Vale do Cávado, Aveiro, Caldas da Rainha, and Lisbon.
Curated and coordinated by Guta Moura Guedes and Emily Campbell, the team also included Jonathan Rowson, Jorge Falcato Simões, Renato Bispo, Susana António, and Vincenzo di Maria. Initiated in 2009 with an original brief from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), the second edition of Action for Age was a co-production of EXD’11, RSA, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
